Goal

My first goal is to feed one family in my town Thanksgiving Dinner. This means I either need to raise $60.00 or have the following items donated: A Turkey, 2 Boxes of Stuffing, 12 Rolls, 1 Bag of Potatoes, 2 Packets for Gravy, 3 Cans of Corn, 3 Cans of Baked Beans, 3 Cans of Green Beans, and 1 Pie. If you are interested in donating items, please e-mail me at ethans_service_project@yahoo.com

Third Thanksgiving delivery

This is our last delivery. We also had two pumpkin pies. I hope they like them!

(For some reason when I originally posted these they did not publish correctly,  This was delivered on November 22, 2013)

Turkey!

Today we went bought a turkey for one of the families! I think I will have enough for two families. Maybe three families. But we will have to see. A few people have said they will bring things on Monday. I hope I can do three!
(This post did not publish currently when I posted it as well.  This Turkey was delivered on November 26, 2013)

Report

This is Ethan's mom. I did a little follow up conversation with Ethan after we had delivered all three of his meals.  I'd like to report that he was a totally changed little boy. Ready to donate all his toys at a moments notice and more than happy to do it too.  But, of course, we are talking about a seven year old after all.

I don't mean to say that he is selfish and unkind.  I think he is like every other child out there.  But I do think that this project was a good start.  And only a start.  I plan to continue to talk to him about opportunities around us that he can be proactive about fixing himself. We will continue to post about his/our progress as we do so.

I don't believe that you can just simply do one thing around the holidays and then declare that you have done your job for the year.  Certainly, there are more opportunities around Thanksgiving and Christmas time.  The holidays are very tough for some people and that means that we need to step up and help.  But as I look around our neighborhood I can see that even in our very small town they are so many people that struggle year round.

I think Ethan is wonderful boy, who does indeed help others when required.  But what I am trying to instill in him is that he needs to look for ways to help, be proactive about it, rather than waiting for someone to come and ask him, or force him, to help with things.

After all is said and done, I think this was a good experience for him.  He met his goal of feeding one family.  He exceeded his goal by feeding three families. I feel that he was able to see that people near him are suffering, not in just some far away land.  But around the block, down the street, and even people he knows are in need of help.  And he is able to offer help - even though he is only seven.

Family One: This family consisted of two parents and one little boy, about three years old.  The mom had just lost her job and they had nearly nothing left in their little apartment.  They were being forced to move out.  We provided them with a full Thanksgiving meal and a package of cars for their son.

Family Two: This family consisted of two parents and three children.  They had simply come under hard times due to the economy. Coupled with unforeseen medical expenses they could really use a little help.  We provided them with a full Thanksgiving dinner as well.

Family Three:  This last family consisted of two parents and four children.  The father had just had some serious emergency surgery.  They did not have insurance and he was unable to work.  We provided them with a full Thanksgiving dinner and a Christmas tree as well since they would not be able to purchase one for their family as well.

I am talking to some of the Senior Centers here in town to see what we could do for a small project for some of their people there.  We will post more about his progress after we decided what we will be doing.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in his service project.  Wether is was by donating goods or money.  I know that these families were greatly appreciative of what we were able to do for them and we certainly could not have done without you!

Thanksgiving Delivery!

We made a delivery to a family today. They didn't have anything. Their tv was on the floor. They didn't have any pictures on the walls and they didn't have toys either.

My mom talked to them about how to cook their turkey.

I hope they have a Happy Thanksgiving!
